Hebrews 3:7-13, KJV
7 Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear His voice,
8 Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:
9 When your fathers tempted Me, proved Me, and saw My works forty years.
10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known My ways.
11 So I sware in My wrath, They shall not enter into My rest.)
12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.
13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
Unbelief causes us to disobey. Disobedience leads to rebellion.
The Israelites witnessed and experienced God’s glory, power and providence for 40 years in the wilderness. God cared for them like a father would to his children. With magnificent and terrible power, they were set free from Egyptian slavery.
Forgetfulness, it seem, caused them to complain and doubt God. Eventually – to rebel against Him. They don’t believe that God is able to care and provide for their needs. They always complain to Moses for bringing them out of Egypt and into the desert to die of hunger or thirst.
12 See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. 13 But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.
The only way to cure rebellion is to surrender our will to God on a daily basis. Let us remember and contemplate on God’s goodness and faithfulness in keeping His promises and fill our hearts with thanksgiving. Forgetting His goodness towards us is being ungrateful. An ungrateful heart would never find rest, because the heart is full of deceit and unbelief. It’s like a dirt road, it hardens when it is traveled or trampled always. If we allow sin to pass and trample our hearts time and time again, then it will be as hard as a stone.
The only way to cure rebellion is to surrender our will to God on a daily basis.
